Thomas Mont Boggs

Obituary Date: Sunday, March 5, 2023

Thomas Mont Boggs (Tom, “T” or Pop to many who loved him), age 90, of Dahlonega, Georgia, passed on Sunday, March 5, 2023, following an extended illness.

Tom was born on July 2, 1932, to his father, the late Fitzyough Lee Boggs, and mother, the late Chessie Conley Boggs, in Roane County, West Virginia. Raised in a rural community during the great depression. He was the 6th of 7 children. The values instilled and lessons learned during his youth seemed to stay with him all of his years.

In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susie Ann Boggs; brothers, Forrest Boggs, Lee Boggs, and Steve Boggs and sisters, Lula Short, Geraldine Roe, and Virginia Ferrell.

A blind date brought Tom and Susie Bishop, also of West Virginia, together, and in 1958, they became husband and wife. Their surviving children include Kathy Boggs Pfersick of Gainesville, GA, and Kimberly G. Stafford of Dahlonega, GA. Other survivors include grandsons Dylan T. Stafford and Ryan C. Stafford, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Tom was a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. He served with the U.S. Air Force in Korea and was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. The remainder of his military career was served with the U.S. Army. An Army Airborne Ranger and Ranger Instructor, he served two tours in Vietnam and was the recipient of numerous decorations, medals, badges, commendations, citations, and or campaign ribbons that include the Good Conduct Medal (First, Second, and Third Award), Combat Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal w/1 Silver Star and 1 Bronze Star, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Bronze Star, 4 Overseas Service Bars, Staff Service Medal (2nd Class), Bronze Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal w/“V” Device, Army Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Master Parachutist Badge.

In 1973, SFC Thomas M. Boggs retired from active duty while serving at Camp Frank D. Merrill in Dahlonega, GA, with over 20 years of service. He will be remembered by his family as a true patriot.

Following his retirement from the U.S. Army, Tom and Susie remained in Dahlonega to raise their family. Tom pursued his interests in construction, travel, and woodwork. A craftsman, he maintained a carpentry business for many years and was known to spend long hours in his shop designing and building furniture and cabinets for relatives and many others in the community.

Tom loved his family, nature, long walks, visiting friends at the “Wheel,” this county, and, unapologetically, what he viewed as right.
He possessed a playful sense of humor, usually reserved for those close to him that miraculously sustained the course of his illness. He was an extraordinary man, loved dearly by his family and friends, and has left a precious legacy for so many. His life was an adventure. He will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, it is the request of the family that donations be made to a charity of choice, plant a tree or simply do something kind for someone or something.

In loving memory, a celebration of Tom’s life is to be planned for a later date.
