Robert Marvin White

Obituary Date: Thursday, June 22, 2023

Robert Marvin White, known to friends and family as Bob, passed away June 22nd 2023 in Gainesville GA at the age of 90.

Bob was the son of George E. and Olive White of Summit NJ. He attended Summit High School, after having spent his early years in Montreal and Toronto Canada, where he had his fondest childhood memories.

Bob graduated from Rutgers University with a BS in Agriculture, and the University of Texas where he received his MBA. Bob served in the US Air Force in the US Air Cadet Program.

Bob’s met his wife of 64 years, Mona, working at the flagship Neiman Marcus in Dallas Texas. They married in 1959 and had two children, a son William, and a daughter Laura (known professionally as Welker White).

Bob moved into advertising, rising through the ranks at the internationally renowned ad agency Ogilvy and Mather, retiring as senior Vice President and Marketing Director prior to retirement at age 55.

The latter part of Bob’s life was devoted to his pursuit of painting. After studying in New York City at the Arts Students League and Silvermine Guild in Connecticut, Bob and Mona retired to Gainesville, GA in 1994. Bob quickly established an artistic home at the Quinlan Art Center, and was a founding member of the “Blue Angels”- an art collective and gallery where he painted up until his death.

As well as the Quinlan, Bob’s work has been shown at The Richard Gertz Gallery in Highlands, North Carolina, and at The Atlanta Artists Center Gallery. Bob's work is in the permanent collection at Brenau University as well as in private and corporate collections. Bob was honored with the 2006 Dianne Reddy Memorial Award for oils at the Salmagundi Club in New York.

Alongside his wife and his children, Bob is survived by his four grandchildren: Sabina, Sarah, Henry and Juliet, as well as his daughter-in-law Donna White and son-in-law Damian Young, and niece and nephew Frieda and John Carone.

Bob’s passing will be celebrated at a private service at home with his family, bathed in the light from Lake Lanier, and surrounded by the paintings he so loved creating.
