Judge Wendell L. Peevy

Obituary Date: Friday, June 23, 2023

The retired Honorable Judge Wendell L. Peevy passed away at age 89 on Friday, June 23, 2023 surrounded by his family, who truly adored him.

Wendell Leland Peevy was born August 7th, 1933 to Herman Peevy and Vernie Roper Peevy. He was raised in Buford, Georgia where he graduated from Lawrenceville High School in 1950. Afterwards, he worked for an engineering company participating in building Lake Lanier. In 1953, Wendell married the love of his life, Darothy Jane Coggins. He then served as an army medic during the Korean War just before attending law school and receiving his Juris Doctor degree from Woodrow Wilson School of Law.

Wendell and Darothy appreciated every moment of their precious time together. As a couple, they were blessed to have created a few successful businesses, made numerous sincere friendships, and had two beautiful daughters, three wonderful grandchildren, and two delightful great grandchildren.

Wendell once owned an insurance agency up town and afterwards, he became a local tax consultant, real estate broker, and property investor. His office has been on Main Street in Buford for longer than most folks can remember. He was sworn in at age 25 and served as a Justice of the Peace for many years, then became a Magistrate Judge in Gwinnett County for another 25 years. He performed his judicial duties for the county for a total of 53 years.  Wendell was incredibly passionate about the law and spoke of his time as a Magistrate Judge with utmost fondness.

Wendell and Darothy Peevy have been very active members of Buford First United Methodist Church for many decades where they formed great friendships and where Wendell took time to participate on many boards and committees.

Wendell had a wide array of interests. He was a skilled fisherman, hunter, and gardener. He enjoyed poetry and philosophy, which he often shared with his children and grandchildren, sparking their interests in the same. He was always up for a game of chess, Chinese checkers, poker, and so on. He was often a busy man, but on Saturdays during football season, he always made time to root for the Georgia Bulldogs. Above all, Wendell was a devoted husband and proud family man. He most enjoyed his time spent with his wife, daughters, siblings, grandchildren, great grandchildren and other extended family members. He was deeply respected and will be greatly missed by all who loved him, especially his wife of 70 years.

Wendell is preceded in death by his parents, Herman Peevy and Vernie Roper Peevy, grandson Austin Grant, brothers-in-law Telford White, James Leo Coggins and Ralph Coggins, and sisters-in-law Ruth Coggins and Sara Coggins. Wendell is survived by his wife, Darothy Coggins Peevy, daughters Deborah Davisson (David) and Donna Grant (Tommy), grandchildren Dena Finn (James) and Ali Grant, and great grandchildren Thomas Finn and Emma Finn. Additionally, Wendell is survived by three beloved siblings: Wilma Peevy White, Tony Peevy (Jeannine), and Weston Peevy (Nancy) as well as cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Wendell’s family will receive visitors at Flanigan Funeral Home on Thursday, June 29, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow in the Flanigan Funeral Home chapel at 4:00 p.m.
