Mr. Gregory Lewis Smith transitioned to his eternal home on August 2, 2023. Lewis was born in Wayne County on December 11, 1969 and grew up in Jesup. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, John Stanton Smith and Jackie Miller Smith Harrison. His brother Stan Smith also preceded him in death, as did his stepfather, David “Bud” Harrison.
Lewis is survived by his wife of 23 years, Angel Archer Smith, and five sons: Austin Akin, his wife Margaret, and their daughter Riley; Kyle Smith; Eric Akin, his wife Kimberly, and their daughter Emersyn; John Lewis Smith and his wife Anna; and Trent Smith. He is also survived by his special nephew who was like a son, Stanton Smith. In addition, Lewis is survived by sisters Lynn Smith, Dana Graham, and Lanette Beaver and her husband Jasper, as well as nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and a host of cousins.
While his family grieves his loss, they celebrate his legacy. Lewis never failed to envelope his family with unconditional love with every step they took. He fiercely loved his wife, his boys, and his granddaughters. He maintained strong bonds with his extended family, many of whom sought counsel from Lewis. Lewis’s contribution to the world of recovery cannot be overstated. A 28-year recovering alcoholic, his first-hand experiences allowed him to counsel and encourage others to enjoy the freedom that a sober life allows. He faithfully attended AA meetings not only for his own continued sobriety but to encourage those who were just beginning their walk. Mere words cannot express all that Lewis’s life encompassed – dry wit, wise counsel, direct chastisement when needed, all while being human himself and recognizing his own flaws.
A celebration of his life will be held on August 12, 2023, at 3:00 at Memorial Park Funeral Homes and Cemeteries in Gainesville, Georgia.
Memorial Park Funeral Home, 2030 Memorial Park Road, Gainesville, GA 30504 is in charge of arrangements.
