Thomas Charles Johnson

Obituary Date: Saturday, September 30, 2023

Mr. Thomas Charles Johnson, 82, of Gainesville, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2023 at his residence following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at Northlake Baptist Church. Rev. Danny Jones and Rev. Tony Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Tom was born at Fort Lewis, Washington on August 14, 1941. He was the son of the late Charles Robert and Genevieve (Montgomery) Johnson. When he was 18 years old, he entered the US Marine Corps and proudly served our country for six years, part of his six years in the reserves.

He was working for the US Postal Service when he had an encounter with Greyhound bus lines. It was through Greyhound that he met his wife of 46 years. He saw most of the United States through his driving. Greyhound was his favorite job. After nearly 14 years, he decided to retire to be able to spend more time with his family. After Greyhound, he tried numerous opportunities and eventually settled in the family grocery business working for B and L Grocery. When the store closed, he turned to law-enforcement. He started with Hall County Sheriff’s Office. He later joined the Lake Lanier Islands police force and then went to Gainesville College Police Force, where he eventually retired.

He was a member of Northlake Baptist Church and enjoyed volunteering in different ways, including the food pantry, and security. His favorite thing to do was spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He lived a full and adventurous life up until two years ago, when he developed health issues, including cancer in the last year.

He was a marine fighter until the end and was surrounded by his loving family when the Lord called him home. His passing will leave an enormous hole in our lives, and he will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his son, Mike Johnson and brothers, Al Johnson and Frank Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Regina (Gina) Stewart Johnson of Gainesville; daughters, Lissa Hunt (Clayton) of Irving, TX, Debra Novak (John) of Crawfordsville, IN, Tricia Davis (Buddy) of Olympia, WA; sons, Tommy Johnson (Elizabeth) of Buford, GA, Eric Johnson (Kelly) of Gainesville, GA; grandchildren, Paiton, Callie, Morgan (Jeff), Ellisha, Ashley, Dustin, Krisara, Victoria, Jeremiah, Miles, Drake, Bella, Evan, Hannah, Oliver, Evie, Ethan, Charlotte, Eli, Micah, Brie, Luke; great grandchildren, Liam, Oakley, Alden, Lyra, Nora, Kallum,  Alexis, Ava, Brayden, Gavin, Abby; siblings, Fred Johnson (Pat), Mel Miceli, Fran Jacobson, Steve Johnson; mother in law, Juanita Stewart; sister in law, Debbie Sanders and a multitude of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives including his bonus family, Eric and Wendy Goodnight and Dennis and Karen DeMercer, Eliot, Baxter and Hadden.
