Charles Nelson Moore, age 94, of Gainesville, Georgia died peacefully in his sleep on December 2, 2023. Charles will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind man with a generous heart and playful spirit.
Charles is survived by his son, John Moore, John’s wife, Jennifer Moore, and his grandson, Patrick Moore, along with Charles’s sister, Elinor DuVal and her husband, Chuck DuVal. Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mildred Ann Moore, who passed away in April 2021 and his sister, Doris Ann Anderson, who passed away in May 2015.
Charles was born on August 9, 1929 in Piedmont, Ohio, the son of Harold Hopkins Moore and Bessie Edna Nelson Moore. Charles graduated from Freeport High School in 1947. From 1947 to 1950, he worked in an Ohio coal mine until serving in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1951 to 1952, and Reserves until 1956. While in Korea, he was trained as a mechanic and earned a Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars. In 1955, Charles went to work for Ford Motor Company where he worked his way up from an entry level position as an apprentice to a general foreman for all of the skilled trades at his location. He retired from Ford in 1986.
Charles and his wife, Ann, met on Ann’s family farm in Freeport, Ohio where he enjoyed being outside operating tractors and working with Ann’s father. The happy couple were married on May 2, 1953. They were true soulmates and enjoyed 67 fun-filled years of marriage until Ann’s passing.
As avid nature lovers, Charles and Ann visited all 50 states and several Canadian provinces, often in their beloved Airstream trailer with their son, John and the family pets. Camping, fishing, and animal spotting drives in National Parks generated many beautiful memories for the Moore family. Later in life, Charles and Ann became world travelers, exploring countries on several continents where they acquired unique memorabilia and Charles captured beautiful photographs to remind them of their travels.
Charles and Ann moved to Gainesville, Georgia in 1997 to be closer to their son’s wife and her family in Atlanta. They were members of the First Presbyterian Church where they enjoyed singing, attending church suppers, and making new friends. They adored their house on Lake Lanier where Charles enjoyed boating, playing pool with friends, and riding his bicycle around the neighborhood. Charles also loved to play music from the 50s and 60s with family and friends, often on sunset cruises around the lake or sitting on the porch watching the sunset. Well into his 80s, Charles remained a thrill seeker. He particularly enjoyed motorcycle riding, snow skiing, and jet skiing with his son, John, and grandson, Patrick, who once told Charles that he hoped he would “be as cool of a grandpa as you are when I get to be your age.”
At a future date yet to be determined, Charles’s ashes will be interred at First Presbyterian Church in a private family service and at the family farm in Ohio where Charles and Ann first met and built many beautiful memories together.
