Brenda Kay Morgan Shumake, who loved to be called “Gran” by her grandchildren, departed her loving family on January 6, 2024.
Brenda was born in Gainesville, GA on December 5, 1943, to Carroll Taylor Morgan and Mozelle Holeman Morgan.
She was a graduate of Gainesville High School and received a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Tift Women’s College. Brenda retired from the Jackson County School System where she taught at North Jackson Elementary for 30 years. During her teaching career, Brenda was twice selected “Teacher of the Year”.
Brenda was a lifelong member of Talmo Baptist Church where she served in many capacities through the years. She demonstrated her love of music through the church as a pianist and organist for over 60 years. During this time, she shared her gift of music by teaching many young children piano lessons.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ned Shumake and her dear friend Billy Sosebee.
Survivors include her daughters Cindy McMullan (Brant) of Jefferson, Carol Ann Ligon (Rusty) of Gainesville, and Lee Ann Pittman (Chad) of Gainesville. Her beloved grandchildren Elizabeth, Sara, and Cathryn McMullan, Eli and Emily Ligon, and Brady and Bryce Pittman.
Gentlemen honored as pallbearers are Eli Ligon, Tucker Schroer, BJ Sosebee, Jonathan Cooper, Brady Pittman, and Sky Niblett.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 9, 2024, from 5-7pm at Evans Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at Talmo Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 2pm with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
The family would also like to express their gratitude to our very special caregivers: Deneen Morris, Kelsey Poole, Denise Craig Stringer, and Abby Pittman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Talmo Baptist Church.
