Dr. Laena Karnstedt

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Laena Karnstedt, a beloved board-certified internal medicine physician, fellow of the American College of Physicians, devoted mother, supportive spouse, and cherished member of our community. Dr. Karnstedt passed away peacefully on April 9th, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of others.

Born in Missouri, Laena Karnstedt embarked on a journey of healing and service that would touch countless lives. She earned her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine in 1991, and completed her internship in internal medicine at the same institution in 1992. Driven by her passion for patient care, she pursued an externship in outpatient internal medicine in Walham, Massachusetts, in 1993, followed by a residency at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Boston.

In 1995, fate brought Laena Karnstedt together with Michael Watts, her ying to his yang for the next 28 years. The next year, they exchanged vows and began a beautiful journey together. Their family expanded with the arrival of their daughters, Veronica Watts in 1997, and Olivia Watts in 2000. Laena embraced motherhood with the same grace, love, and dedication she brought to her medical practice, instilling values of courage, empathy, and resilience in her daughters.

Throughout her career, Dr. Karnstedt exemplified excellence in medicine and touched countless lives with her expertise and compassionate care. Her commitment to women's health was unwavering, but she was a beacon of hope and support for anyone in need. In recognition of her exceptional contributions, she was honored as The American Heart Association's Doctor of the Year in 2008, a testament to her dedication and professionalism.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Laena Karnstedt was a pillar of strength and support within our community. She possessed a rare gift for listening and comforting, offering solace and guidance to all who crossed her path. Her kindness knew no bounds, and her impact will be felt for generations to come. Most will agree a Laena will only come around once in a lifetime.

Survivors include husband, Michael Watts; daughters Veronica Watts and Olivia Watts; Mother, Betty Karnstedt; Father, Vernon Karnstedt; brothers, Curt Karnstedt and Paul Karnstedt.

Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 2:00 pm Hillside Chapel Funeral Home and Cremation Services. The family will receive friends from 11 am till time of the service.
