Stephen "Steve" Van Major, Sr.

Stephen "Steve" Van Major, Sr., age 75, of Gainesville, Georgia, peacefully passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2024, following an extended illness. 

Steve was born on August 27, 1948, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to the late Albert and Algadee Major. He graduated from Fulton High School in Knoxville and East Tennessee State University. He went on to enjoy a successful career with Liberty Mutual Insurance and retired in 2007. 

He was a friend to all who knew him and never met a stranger. With his spirited personality and countless stories, Steve was the life of the party. He was an avid sports fan and loved the Tennessee Volunteers fiercely. Steve was also heavily involved in the athletics community at Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, where his sons attended high school. 

Above all, Steve was a devoted husband, father, papaw, and friend who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends as much as possible. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. 

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Christopher Major, and his sister, Cynthia Major Woods. 

Survivors include his beloved wife of 54 years, Nancy Howell Major of Gainesville; sons Stephen "Van" (Laurie) Major, Jr. of Birmingham, Alabama, and Courtney (Lisa) Major of Cumming, Georgia; grandsons Jackson, Gavin, and Camden Major of Birmingham, and Aidan Major of Cumming; niece Megan (Alex) McGee of Knoxville, and nephews Trey (Kinsey) Howell of Knoxville and Brett (Olivia) Howell of Seattle, Washington; as well as great-nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Little & Davenport Funeral Home, 355 Dawsonville Highway, SW, Gainesville, Georgia. Reverend Mike Morgan will officiate. A reception will immediately follow the service at the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a memorial contribution be made to Meals by Grace, 775 Sanders Road, Cumming, Georgia 30041.
