Jane Elizabeth Carter January 5th, 1931 May 30th, 2024 Born Jan. 5th, 1931, Jane Elizabeth Carter passed away peacefully on May 30th, surrounded by family members at her residence, The Gardens of Gainesville. She was predeceased by her parents, Foy Benjamin Carter and Foye Martin Carter, and her sisters Louise Byrd, Helen Osborne, and Lell Payne. She is survived by several nieces, a nephew, great nieces and nephews. The family expresses special appreciation to Jane's great niece and name sake, Jane Jackson Lloyd, and her husband Gray Lloyd of Gainesville who lovingly coordinated her care for the last several years. Jane was born in Enterprise, AL, the youngest of four girls and the family later moved to Chipley, Florida. After graduating from Chipley High School, she went on to study at Stetson University. She felt called to a life devoted to Christian work at an early age and accepted God's call to full time Christian service after college. She first served as the Director of Youth at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Atlanta, and then beginning in 1956 as Director of Youth at First Baptist Church, Atlanta. In 1965, she became the Director of Youth at First Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, and in 1968 at First Baptist Church, Huntsville. She was a loving, compassionate, and challenging leader of youth who led Sunday schools, church training, youth camps, missions and fellowship gatherings. . Beginning in 1976, Jane transitioned from church youth work and accepted a position as Director of Volunteer Services at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. She loved the position and the opportunity to organize both adult and youth volunteers who she felt were so important to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center Auxiliary and the community. She had a passion for leadership and always sought to place each volunteer in the most fitting service area based on their interest so that they might gain the greatest reward for their service contribution. She was also a master organizer who worked tirelessly to help establish The Window Shop, Market Place, Love Light, Volunteer Appreciation and Auxiliary Membership events and ensure that all were successful Jane was well respected by colleagues of the Northeast Georgia Medical Center and peers throughout the State of Georgia and beyond. She served as President of Georgia Society of Directors of Volunteer Services of the Georgia Hospital Association. She was also a member of the American Society of Directors of Volunteer Services of the American Hospital Association. Jane was honored with the Wyn Award, named for Wyn Zeh, by Georgia Society Directors of Volunteer Services, for making notable contributions to benefit the developmental and growth of healthcare volunteerism, and GSDVS. An avid traveler, Jane traveled across the US and to distant countries to explore and open her vision of the world. In the early years of her youth work, one of her trips included attending the Baptist World Youth Conference in Bern, Switzerland. She loved the American West, Canada and traveled to most of Western Europe, Turkey and the Holy Land, Israel. A talented cook, homemaker and gardener, Jane most enjoyed entertaining, especially during holidays for family and friends. Jane was famous for her handmade stained-glass hard candy at Christmas, which she freely shared with so many. She left a positive and lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals through her ministry, mentoring, love and committed friendship. She always felt blessed by her loving family and many friends far and wide. She will be dearly missed and remembered by those who loved her and called her friend. Her legacy of love and faith will continue to inspire those who were blessed to have known her, worked with her, and were mentored by her. Her last act of giving was to donate her body to the Emory University School of Medicine. Jane was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Gainesville, and a reception will be held there in her memory on July 21, from 1:30 to 3:00pm in the church parlor.
