Kayanne Shoffner Massey

Kayanne Shoffner Massey, 84 of Gainesville passed away Sunday December 22, 2024.

Kayanne and Abit’s epic, 64 year love story began when Abit saw her photo in the newspaper as the newly crowned Miss Georgia.  His legendary courtship began by arranging a lunch in her honor at the Georgia State Capitol. Abit then called Kayanne and offered to chauffeur her to the event.  She politely refused, crushing Abit, but that did not deter him. He arrived an hour early to the luncheon and adjusted the seating chart so that he was sitting by none other than the intelligent, beautiful Kayanne Shoffner. Shortly after, Kayanne was surprised to find that Mr. Massey as she called him then, just happened to be in New York to attend a Jaycees event timed perfectly to her Miss Georgia New York tour stop. He invited her on their first date — to Niagara Falls with Kayanne’s mother in the back seat as chaperone! 

Kayanne was born to the late Betty Lewis Shoffner and Paul Shoffner in Calhoun, Georgia, the eldest of three (date of birth omitted at the deceased’s request) with younger siblings Celeste and Paul. She excelled in basketball, theatre, and debate. Her favorite Christmas memory involved a new bicycle with long days of fun and freedom with neighborhood friends. She admired her father’s public support of school integration and was drawn to study education. After two years at Agnes Scott, she began her married life with Abit in Gainesville, resuming her college studies at Brenau University, where she graduated magna cum laude and was later recognized as outstanding alumna. Kayanne and Abit created a joyful life together that was never dull, engaging in community and church activities and raising two children, Lewis and Camille. Kayanne, also affectionately called “Mimi” by her family, loved being a full-time mother while serving as a substitute teacher and community volunteer. 

As First Baptist Church nursery volunteers every Sunday morning, Kayanne and Abit were delighted to receive a surprise acknowledgment for their 50 years of service during a Sunday morning service. Kayanne also taught at Vacation Bible School and chaired the Human Resources Committee. She enjoyed time with her friends, playing bridge and tennis with the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association, and teaching a 6 am aerobics class. Gainesville High School named Kayanne and Abit honorary graduates in 2012, highlighting their many years of support for the school. They served together as State Chairs of March of Dimes and supported the Hall County Library System, Quinlan Visual Arts Center, Good News Clinic, Junior Achievement and many other organizations and programs. 

Kayanne was a passionate sports fan, especially UGA and GHS football and basketball, and was Abit’s secret weapon behind numerous Rotary sports poll victories. She was deeply involved in local and state politics with values of equality and justice. Kayanne’s favorite quote is “kindness is magic.” She often appeared to be a magician to her two children, Lewis and Camille, their life partners Amy and Gillie, and four grandchildren, Chandler, Cameryn, Christian, and Lucia, as she offered endless hours of entertainment and devotion. Later in life, she became a consummate consumer of “Days of Our Lives” and Hallmark movies starring Chandler, while continuing to be a bridge champion, crossword word puzzle and Jeopardy wiz, and active Mensa member. Regular Panache Salon appointments followed by Longstreet Cafe breakfasts and trips to Tips & Toes Nails were nonnegotiable, as were summer beach vacations with family on Sea Island. 

Kayanne’s courage as a stage 4 breast cancer survivor 30 years ago and several miraculous recoveries from heart failure amazed all those around her. She handled challenges with humor and grace and focused on other people, becoming a hopeful resource for those struggling with illness. Perhaps more than anything, Kayanne will be remembered for her devotion to family and friends, wicked sense of humor, and gift of storytelling. Even in her last days, her wit and love for others prevailed. 

The family is grateful for the excellent care she received from Lanier Village Estates and Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Alta Vista Cemetery, with a celebration of life service to be held at a later date.
