Clarence Jewell Sullens

Obituary Date: Tuesday, December 24, 2024

Retired Police Chief, Clarence Jewell Sullens, age 76, of Cleveland passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.

Mr. Sullens was born in Hall County on August 15, 1948, to the late Clarence Britton and Nancy Isabelle Sullens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Horace Sullens, Dewitt Sullens, Johnny Sullens and Jim Sullens, sisters Nancy Barlow, Martha Hudson, and Marie Blitchington. Mr. Sullens proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Viet Nam War. He was honorably discharged on November 8, 1973. 

Mr. Sullens would begin his career in law enforcement that would take the next forty years of his life and span several agencies in Hall County. The last fifteen years of his career were spent serving and protecting the people of Maysville, Georgia as Chief of Police.  Chief Sullens committed himself to the community and loved the people he was called to serve.  On August 25, 2014, He announced his retirement to the Maysville City Council.  At this time, his title of “Chief” would be changed into fulltime “Papa Jewell”.  

“Papa Jewell’s” unwavering love and dedication to his wife and family were felt in every way. He was always there to show support. “Papa Jewell” was dearly loved and will be deeply missed. 

Missing him most will be his wife Betty Sullens; son Chris Sullens; daughter and son in law Teresa and Ron Baker; stepchildren Misty and Dale Sutton, Chris and Jenny Anderson, Ricky Anderson, Debbie and Ray Dean Dover; grandchildren Idgie Sullens, Henry Sullens, George Sullens, Thomas Sullens, Brooke and Justin Pittman, Dakota and Katie Sutton, Bailey Anderson, Jacob Anderson, Tyler Anderson, Chad and Salley Smith, Tonya and Brandon Archer, Kaitlyn and Chris Carter, Michael Anderson and Christie Anderson; numerous great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.   

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Monday, December 30, 2024, in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Yonah View Memorial Gardens, with military honors.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday and from 12:00 PM until the service hour at the funeral home.
