John Tammany Corning

John Tammany Corning, age 60 of 99 Hannah Hill Drive, Toccoa passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 26th after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

John was born on November 21st, 1964 in Auburn, New York. There he grew up and was an exceptionally talented athlete, playing many successful seasons of lacrosse, baseball, and football. He graduated high school from Milford Academy (Milford, Connecticut) and then attended Ithaca College (Ithaca, New York), where he played football and received a Bachelors of Science Degree and a Masters Degree in Physical Education.

Early in his career, John was a public school educator and coach in Upstate, New York. He went on to pursue a career in the Fiber Optic Industry. John’s work required him to travel and live in numerous places throughout the U.S. before settling in Georgia in 2009. John described Northeast Georgia as the most beautiful place he had ever lived. It was there that he met his wife, Vanessa and for many years, they lived a happy and successful life together surrounded by family and good friends. John adored his family, and spent much of his time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

John is survived by his wife, Vanessa Rumsey Corning of Toccoa; his daughter, Victoria (Josh) Kowalski of Hamilton, New York; stepdaughters, Erin Oxley and friend, Trey Dunson of Toccoa and Anna (Aaron) Krumenacker of Cornelia; six grandchildren, Olivia Kowalski, Jackson Kowalski, Avery Krumenacker, Luke Krumenacker, Levi Krumenacker, and Sadie Krumenacker.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Olivia Corning, his two brothers, Peter Corning and David Corning and by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Watson and Katherine Rumsey.

The family will receive friends at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home on Friday, April 11, 2025, 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.  Online condolences may be left for family at www.acree-davisfh.com
