Mary D. Vorees

Mary D. Vorees, age 94, died June 16, 2009 at the home of
her son, George Vorees. She was born in Watertown,NY in 1914
and lived in New Jersey, New York, Virginia and Florida. In
her life's work prior to retirement, she was a school
teacher in New York and New Jersey. The most memorable time
was in Howells, NY in a one room schoolhouse teaching sixth,
seventh, and eighth grade. She is a graduate of Kean
University in New Jersey where she received her B.S. in
elementary education.

During World War II she managed a social club for GI's in
Reykjavik, Iceland. Post retirement in Florida, she emceed a
group called the "Merry Sing-a-longs" who visited nursing
homes twice a week entertaining with singing, rhythm
instruments, and clowns. Sundays, her time was spent by
manning the gift counter and taking admission tickets at the
Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) Museum on North Hutchinson
Island.

She was predeceased by her husband John, her son John, and
her great grandchildren, Brendan and Adyson Claire. She is
survived by her daughter, Barbara Shoemaker of Lisbon,
NY,Sons and Daughters-in-law; George and Pat Vorees of
Buford, GA, Charles and Penny Vorees of Monticello, NY, and
her daughter-in-law Linda Vorees of Oak Ridge, TN. She has
11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Liturgy will be said Saturday June 20, 2009 at 11
a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Her final wishes
would be for everyone to pray "The Lord's Prayer" daily and
to keep busy by not letting the "rocking chair get you". In
lieu of flowers, donations can be made at your local
American Red Cross or VFW in her name.
