Sutton Lewis Shirley Jr.

Sutton Lewis Shirley Jr., age 80, of Shirley Road, Gainesville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2009 at his residence following a brief illness.

Memorial services are scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 2:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church. Dr. David McDonald and Reverend Paul Evans will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 22, 2009 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home North-Riverside Chapel.

Mr. Shirley was born on December 29, 1928 to the late Sutton Lewis Shirley Sr. and Marie Shirley in Fulton County. His family moved to Gainesville during his high school years, where he graduated from Gainesville High School in 1946. He was in the United States Air Force and worked for AT&T. Mr. Shirley enjoyed farming and raising cattle. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville.

Mr. Shirley is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jacqueline Shirley of Gainesville, his son and daughter-in-law, Sutton Lewis Shirley III and Tessa Shirley of Gainesville, sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and James C. Roberts of Atlanta, granddaughter, Jacqueline E. Shirley of Athens, grandson, Sutton Lewis Shirley IV of Gainesville, granddaughter, Reilly Anne Shirley of Gainesville, and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like for donations to be made to The Relay for Life, c/o Chestatee Middle School, 2790 Fran Mar Dive, Gainesville, Georgia, 30506, or to the Basic Sunday School Class Mission Fund, c/o First Presbyterian Church, 800 South Enota Drive N.E., Gainesville, Georgia 30501.
