Jim Wayne Raymer

Obituary Date: Saturday, February 27, 2010
Jim Wayne Raymer, age 63, of Dahlonega died peacefully at home early in the morning of February 27, 2010 with his wife and his son at his bedside.

Although he was a native of Nashville, TN, Mr. Raymer lived most of his adult life in north Georgia. He made Dahlonega his home eighteen years ago when he moved here to open his business, Transmissions By Jim.

He was the son of the late Howard Elmore Raymer and Lucille Johnson Raymer and was also preceded in death by his brother Tommy Raymer.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Fortson Raymer, Dahlonega; his son Thomas Eugene Raymer, Watkinsville; six brothers and sisters, Howard Raymer, Jr., James Raymer, Judy Marsh, Wanda Phillips, Bettye Wittenmeier and Barbara Brandon, all of Nashville, TN; and extended family and friends.

Mr. Raymer served active duty in the United States Army, 1st Infantry Division from 1964-1972, including three tours in Vietnam.

After his military service, he focused his extensive mechanicals abilities on automobile transmissions. He operated several shops in other locations before choosing Dahlonega as the place where he wanted to open Transmission By Jim. He came to genuinely love the area. Its beautiful woodlands and hills gave him long hours of enjoyment and peace, and he treasured the customers and friends who passed through his shop doors and his life.

In the fall of 2008, major health problems forced him to close his business, but he continued to enjoy helping people with his trouble-shooting skills and expert advice. He always said that he felt his life came together in his shop, and his love of his work continued to the end.

A memorial service in celebration of his life will he held on Saturday, March 13th at the family property near Unicoi in White County. Friends are asked to call the family for details and travel directions.
