G P Jackson McCollum, age 87, of Clarkesville passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2010, following a sudden illness.
Mr. McCollum was born on September 12, 1922 in Clarkesvilleto the late Price and Birdie Church McCollum. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jim Crider McCollum; brothers, Reeves and Lewis McCollum; and sisters Celestine Nicholson and Hazel Fisher. Mr. McCollum was a member of Cool Springs United Methodist Church.
During World War II, Mr. McCollum worked as a Civil Service worker doing harbor repair and damaged ship salvage at Pearl Harbor from 1942 to 1944, when he transferred to the Charleston Navy Yard. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1945 through March 1946, with the Navy Construction Battalion (SeaBees), with service at Pearl Harbor and Guam as a member of the 2nd Special NCB, and the 34th Special NCB, a Stevedore outfit. Upon returning to Clarkesville after his service in the SeaBees he started McCollum Brothers Cabinet Shop in 1947. Mr. McCollum was a master wood-craftsmen, home builder, and developer.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, E. Jay and Susan McCollum, Clarkesville; his daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Terry Gladden, Clarkesville; his brothers, Johnnie G. and Joe Curtis McCollum; 4 grandchildren, Melissa Lovell, Wesley Gladden, Daniel McCollum and wife, Stephanie, and Douglas Gladden; and 2 great-grandchildren, Avalon and Alena Lovell.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2010, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, GA with Rev. Steve McIntyre, Rev. Garvis Kinsey, and Rev. Walter Singletary officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 2, 2010 at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, GA.
