Iola Weissinger

Iola Alice Weissinger was born September 10, 1913 in Midnight, Ms and died April 17, 2010 in Gainesville, GA. Her large family was always the joy of her life.



She was predeceased by her parents, Eugene Liddell Weissinger and Alice Cato Weissinger; her sister, Nettie Corrine Weissinger; her brother, William Strong Weissinger; brothers in law Pail Felker and Jack Lilley, Sr. and nephew Jack Lillie, Jr. Iola is survived by her sisters Emelyn W Lilley, Eugenia W Deaton, Ouida W. Felker, sister in law Stella Margaret Weissinger. She is also survived by 16 nieces and nephews; 28 great nieces and nephews, 10 great-great nieces and nephews.



Iola grew up in Cary, Ms. She graduated from Belhaven College in Jackson, Ms. With a major in Concert Piano and Public School Music. After college, she taught music for several years and also served as the accompanist for the Mississippi College Glee Club. Iola worked as a secretary at Pensacola Naval Air Stations for a time during World War II.



Upon moving to Gainesville in 1943, Iola discovered a love for accounting. She worked as a bookkeeper for Hosch Brothers and for Warren Featherbone; then in 1958 Iola went to work for Pilgrim-Estes Furniture Company. She worked there for 30 years until her retirement at age 75.



Iola loved to keep busy doing things for other people. She enjoyed several types of handwork, but knitting was her favorite activity. She proudly made sweaters, Christmas stockings and afghans for each of her nieces and nephews until the last year of her life. Because of her great love for cats and dogs she was a faithful supporter of the Humane Society. She also enjoyed her many years of service volunteering as a Pink Lady at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. In 2009, the Pilot Club International honored Iola for 50 years of continuous service to her community. A life-long Methodist, Iola was a member of Gainesville First United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday April 24, 2010 in the chapel of Gainesville First United Methodist Church following interment in Alta Vista. The family will receive friends at the church in the Gathering Room after the service.
