William Oscar Burns

William Oscar Burns, age 81 of Demorest, passed away Saturday, August 28, 2010, at The Oaks at Scenic View following an extended illness.
Born in Habersham County on March 21, 1929, he was the son of the late William Edward and Mary Elizabeth Phillips Burns. Mr. Burns was a retired bus driver with the Habersham County School System. He served his country proudly in the United States Army and he was member of Community Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He enjoyed fishing and coon hunting and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents Mr. Burns was preceded in death by his sister, Julie Armour and brother, Leroy Burns.
Surviving are wife, Vernia Davis Burns of Demorest; daughter, Patricia Burns of Demorest; sons and daughters-in-law, Curtis & Lorrie Burns of Gainesville and Alvin & Sheena Burns of Mt Airy; sisters, Frances Wade and Minnie Lee Burns of Franklin County, GA, Nancy Cunningham of Ellenwood, GA, Vernie Johnson of Cornelia, Eunice Shirley of Banks County, GA; brothers, Wilson Burns of Clarkesville and Nelson Burns of Alto; grandchildren, Lee Burns, Josh Burns, Mary Beth Burns, Tabitha Ann Burns; step-grandchildren, Lamar Gerrells and Alicia Free; step-great grandchildren Haley Webb, Connor Free and Bailey Gerrells.
Funeral services are 2:00 pm Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with Rev. Dave Fortner officiating. Interment will follow in Community Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Doug Forrester officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3-5 & 7-9 pm on Sunday and Monday. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Community Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 198, Mt. Airy Ga. 30563.
