Bryan W. Whitfield

Obituary Date: Sunday, August 29, 2010
Bryan W. Whitfield, III, 85, died on August 29, 2010 of an extended illness at his home in Dahlonega. A native of Harlan, Kentucky, he was graduate of the University of Kentucky and a Kentucky Colonel. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Navy. While Living in Harlan, he served as a volunteer for the Harlan County Emergency Rescue Squad. A third generation coal operator, he served as President of the Harlan County Coal Operators and the Harlan Mining Institute, as Vice President of the Kentucky Coal Association and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Associated Industries of Kentucky. In 1981, he traded coal mining for gold mining as one of the founders of the current Consolidated Gold Mines. He received the Historic Preservation and Tourism Award and is a lifetime member of the Lumpkin County Historical Society and a Lt. Colonel of Georgia

He is preceded in death by his parents, Bryan W. Whitfield Jr. and Clay Carter Whitfield, and his brother, John Carter Whitfield.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wanda Huff Whitfield, four children, Clay Whitfield Poe and husband Alan, Centennial, Colorado. Bryan Whitfield IV and wife Dr. Donna, Dahlonega. Amme Whitfield, Sandy Springs, Ga. and Brad Whitfield, Lexington, South Carolina. Seven grandchildren, David Poe, Rachel Poe, Bryan Whitfield VI, Nathan Whitfield, Melissa Whitfield, Michelle Whitfield and William Whitfield. One sister, Amme Whitfield Morgan, Harlan, Kentucky.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am Tuesday August 31, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church. Rev. Albert Daviou will officiate.

Burial will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park.

The Family will receive friends on Monday from 7pm 'til 9pm at Banister Funeral Home.
