Bernice Smith Martin

Obituary Date: Friday, September 10, 2010
Mrs. Bernice Smith Martin went home to be with her Saviour and her loved ones on September 10, 2010. She was surrounded by her family as she passed from this life to the shores of Heaven. She was greatly loved by all she met and especially by her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her cooking talents were known throughout her church and community. She was famous for her Sunday dinners, red velvet cake and black walnut cake. Bible School kids always looked forward to her M&M cookies.

She was born January 1, 1928 in Jackson County. She lived in Hall county many years and in Forsyth County since 1972. She has belonged to two churches during her lifetime that she loved dearly-Mayfield Baptist Church and Shady Grove Baptist Church both in Forsyth County.

She worked 29 ½ years in school food services. She began at Oakwood Elementary School and was retired from the Forsyth County School System as lunchroom manager at Forsyth Central High School. Her last working year was spent as cashier at Chestatee Elementary School.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eston A. and Lena Patterson Smith; her sister's Jeanette Jones, Ruby Faye Byers; brother, Roger Smith and twin brother Boyd Smith.

She is survived by her devoted caregiver and husband of 65 years, Henry V. Martin, Jr., her daughters and sons-in-law Mavis and Dean Burtz, Hilda and Buddy Smith (Lula), Joyce and Marshall Millwood, son and daughter-in-law; Eston and Levenia Martin all of Forsyth County, Grandchildren; Steve and Allison Burtz, Ken and Cindy Burtz, Patty and Damon Stancil of Forsyth County, Matthew and Stacy Smith, Rebecca and Todd Dale, Rachel and Brian Nix of Banks County, Michael and Becky Millwood, Beth and Todd Skinner , Laura Martin, Abbie Martin, Lena and Mark Bennett of Forsyth County, Great- Grandchildren; Jandon and Bailey Smith, Jordan, Taylor, and Dylan Nix, Jathan Dale, Katie Chester and Josh Burtz, Ally and Sara Kathryn Burtz, Madison Carter, Jack and Roxanne Stancil, Jacob, Katie-Beth, and Timmy Millwood, Savanna and Sierra Skinner, John Martin and Reagan Bennett, Sister; Lillian Ivey , Forsyth County and brother , Clyde Smith, Dalton, Special friend and caregiver ,Millie Rankin.
