Leon Whitmire

Leon Whitmire, 68, of Cleveland, Ga. departed this life Friday July 15, 2011 at home following an extended illness in the care of Hospice of Northeast Georgia.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday July 18, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with internment to follow in Alta Vista Cemetery. Rev. Grady White will officiate. The family will receive friends on Sunday July 17, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

A native of Hall County, he was born in the Downey Hospital, and he was a disabled Army Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He served as a watercraft operator and received National Defensive Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal With 2 Campaign Stars, 1 overseas bar, sharpshooter badge with rifle bar M-14, Expert badge with rifle bar M-16. He was involved in the music industry, the gaming industry and retired from home construction.

Leon was of the Baptist faith. He was a loving and active father. He coached Little League baseball for White Sulphur Springs Elementary School and for Hall County Parks and Recreation middle school baseball. He enjoyed life, family and friends.

Leon was preceded in death by his mother, Edith Louise Wehunt-Whitmire, his father, Rev. Ford Clifford Whitmire, and his step-mother, Iva Whitmire. Survivors include his son, Sean Andrew Whitmire and daughter-in-law Jennifer Garbutt Whitmire; son, Dwayne Leon Whitmire; daughter, Terry Whitmire Parks and son-in-law Andy Parks; step-son Timothy Jerry Simmons; and special friends, Ruby Nell Sargent & Linda Wiley Whitmire.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Northeast Georgia or The American Cancer Society.
