Martha Rebecca "Becky" Mackey Burch departed this life on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born in Heath Springs, SC on February 28, 1927 to the late Ira Andrew and Corinne Bruce Mackey, and was married for 60 years to Iris Roberts Burch, who preceded her in death. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Gregory and Elizabeth "Lib" Truesdale of Heath Springs.
She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, David and Terri Burch of St. Simons Island; son, Walter Bruce Burch of Kennesaw; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Mike Haynes of Gainesville; six grandchildren, Mackey Corinne Burch, Bennett Lasseter Burch of St. Simons Island, Matthew David (Dana) Burch of Nashville, Tn., Sarah Rebecca (Rob) Stenzel of Joliet, Ill., Scott Michael Haynes of Atlanta , and Robert Mackey Haynes of Gainesville, two great-grandchildren, Jack Timothy Burch and Lucy Jane Stenzel along with several nieces and nephews.
She was a retired teacher, having taught at Buford High School, Gainesville High School, and Lanier Technical College. She was a member of the Georgia and Hall/Gainesville Retired Educators Associations, and The First United Methodist Church of Gainesville. She enjoyed traveling and cruising to various destinations around the world with friends and her beloved husband, Iris.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2011, at First United Methodist Church in Gainesville, with Dr. Steve Winter and the Rev. Kathy Lamon officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Gathering room.
