Dr. Gwendolyn B. Mundy

Gwendolyn B. Mundy, age 82, of Oakwood passed away Thursday, September 8, 2011 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center after years of declining health following a stroke. She was preceded in death by her parents Boyd and Lorena Bagwell Brown. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, M. Ben Mundy, son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin and Jan Mundy, granddaughters Erin and Shannon Mundy.

Gwen was born March 7, 1929 in Gainesville, GA. She graduated from Gainesville High School, Brenau Women's College and the University of Georgia. She was retired Executive Director of Curriculum for Hall County Schools. Gwen received the Johnnye V. Cox award for Distinguished Service in Instructional Supervision, State of Georgia, was a former member of the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Executive Committee of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, President of the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders, Board of Directors of the National Brenau Alumnae Association, Book fair Committee, May Day Committee, Nominating Committee, Executive Committee, Academic Bowl Judge, Teacher of the Year Oakwood Elementary School, Woman of the Year, Gainesville Business and Professional Women's Club, Member of the Flat Creek Baptist Church where she was an organist, teacher and volunteer, member of Elachee Nature Center, 4-H club Advisory Board, United Way, Gainesville College Foundation, Gainesville Historical Trust, Gainesville Children's Theatre, member of the Brenau Board of Trustees since 1992, Trustee Emerita, Brenau University, Outstanding Alumnae Awards for Professional Service and Service to Brenau, Lodestar award Georgia Committee of Elementary and Middle Schools, Brenau University Volunteer merit Award, Mary Mildred Sullivan Award United Daughters of the Confederacy, Member of Northeast Georgia Medical System Board, Hospital Board, Hospital Authority, Presidents Award for Outstanding Service, Northeast Georgia Health System.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 Saturday at the Little Davenport Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gwendolyn B. Mundy Scholarship Fund, Brenau University, 305 Blvd. Gainesville Georgia 30501 of Flat Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 5504 Flat Creek Rd. Gainesville, Georgia 30504.

Funeral Services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 11 at the Flat Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Jones, Rev. Mark Whiting, Rev. Bill Long and Rev. Loren Hildebrandt presiding. The body will lie in state one hour before the service. Burial will be in Flat Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
