Janie Elizabeth "Betty" Thompson

Mrs. Janie Elizabeth "Betty" Thompson,95,went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 14, 2011, following an extended illness. A daughter of the late O.M. Burgess and Mrs. Bess Bass, she was born June 14, 1916, and lived all of her life in Gainesville. She was married to the late Jim Thompson with whom she ran Thompson Electric Company until his death in 1970 and until her retirement in 1988.

She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she served on the Administrative Board, United Methodist Women, Anglers Sunday School Class, FLOW, Primetimers and the Building Committee. She was for many years active in the Order of Eastern Star and Business and Professional Women.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Thompson, daughter Dorothy Light, brothers John Burgess and O.M. Burgess,Jr.,grandaughter Joyce Light, and her parents.

Survivors include daughter Sarah Wood and husband Jack of Smyrna, daughter Louise Morris and husband Charlie of Toccoa, grandson Bob Light and wife Lek of Atlanta, other grandchildren Jane Allen and husband Ron of Gainesville, Melissa Bishop and husband Paul of Snellville, John Wood of Nashville, Tennessee, Kelly Stevens and husband Richard of Acworth, Mary Andrews and husband Jay of Sugar Hill, fourteen great grandchildren, and Joann Jones, faithful friend and caregiver for fifty years.

The family will receive friends Sunday October 16, 2011 at the Little & Davenport Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday October 17, 2011 at the St. Paul United Methodist Church. The Rev. Calvin Haney will officiate. Interment will follow in the Alta Vista Cemetery.
