Herbert Glenn Harris

Obituary Date: Saturday, December 31, 2011
Herbert Glenn Harris, age 66, of Gainesville passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at his residence. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 03, 2011, at Little and Davenport funeral home in Gainesville. Family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time.

Herb is preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Lucy Harris, brother, Jewell Harris and sister, Joyce H. Cheatham. Survivors include his daughter, Helen Harris of Sandersville, GA; brother, Forrest Harris of Gainesville; numerous nieces and nephews. Herb was a native of Gainesville, growing up in New Holland Village. He was a veteran of the Korean War and returned to Gainesville to begin a multitude of entrepreneurial adventures.

Herb owned a sandwich shop, bartended at the American Legion, owned AAA Pizza, was a founding partner of Credit Depot, which was publicly traded. He owned two mortgage companies, Tornado Homes in Commerce, co-owned Gulf States Mortgage Company and had many rental income properties. Herb was an early pioneer in the revitalization of downtown Gainesville, buying the old Georgia Theatre and extensively renovating it. Herb did an upscale residence in the upper floor with an office downstairs. Herb opened this beautiful showplace and allowed several charitable organizations to use it as their venue. Herb was a member of the Elks Club and the American Legion. Herb enjoyed various coffee clubs at Longstreet's Café and McDonald's. His sense of humor was legendary around Hall County and his many friends will miss his wry wit.
