Dr. Alphonse Francesco Forziati

Dr. Alphonse Francesco Forziati of Dahlonega died June 16, 2012 at the Oaks at Limestone following an extended illness. He was born February 27, 1911 in Boston, Massachusetts, the youngest child of Francesco and Aieda Durazzo Forziati.

Dr. Forziati graduated from Harvard University with BA, MA and PhD degrees in chemistry and physics. After serving four years as instructor, he left Harvard to join the staff of the National Bureau of Standards, Washington, D.C. to participate in the Bureau's World War II and subsequent defense programs. During the Vietnam War, he was assigned to the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense to manage the development of Portable Electric Power systems (fuel cells, thermo-electric and photo-electric generators), Remote Sensing (target detection and identification), and Special Equipment required for the Vietnam environment.

In 1970, Dr. Forziati joined the new Environmental Protection Agency as Assistant Director for Physical Sciences Research. His last assignment was Director of Inadvertent Modification of the Stratosphere Research (the Ozone problem). He retired on March 1, 1980.

Dr. Forziati was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Antonio Forziati , his sister, Joesephine Forziati, his 1st wife, Florence Forziati and his nephew, Francis P. Forziati. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Holcomb Crane Forziati of Dahlonega, stepson, Joe (Betty) Crane of Aiken, SC, step-daughter, Connie (Chili) Childers of Dahlonega, 7 step-grandchildren and 11 step-great grandchildren.

Graveside services are scheduled for Monday, June 18, 2012 at 2:00pm in Memorial Park Cemetery with Reverend Dominic Tran officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 18, 2012 from 12:00pm until service time at 2:00pm at the funeral home.
