Thelma L. Thornton

Obituary Date: Sunday, August 5, 2012


Thelma Lucy Thornton was born May 4, 1915 in Gainesville, Georgia to the late John Henry and Amanda (Butler) Thornton. She was one of two children. She was educated at the Summer-Hill High School, now Fair Street School in Gainesville, GA.

Mrs. Thornton worked outside the home for a short time while raising her son. Thelma was a faithful member of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church where she served on the Missionary Society, Stewardess Board and Secretary of Sunday School. She was always willing to lend a helping hand where needed and she continued to support her church throughout her illness.

Thelma was a beautiful and loving person both inside and out. She was always crocheting afghans, pocket books, hats, scarves and was willing to share them with all. She always greeted you with a warm smile.

Mrs. Thornton departed this life on August 5, 2012 at the New Horizon North Nursing Home, Gainesville, Georgia, where she had many, many friends. Thelma leaves to cherish her memory, her son Michael Taylor, Greensboro, NC; one sister, Annie Clara (Gaga) Martin, Gainesville, GA; one niece, Geraldine Wells and one nephew, Rev. David (Cornelia) Martin, both of Gainesville, GA; five sister-in-laws, Rose L. Watts, Tyler, TX; Kathleen Gordon, Greensboro, NC; Betty Jenkins, Vivian Taylor, Boston, MA, and Cobbie Taylor, Atlanta, GA; three great nieces; five great nephews; three great-great nephews; one great-great niece, and a host of cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 11:00am at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Mrs. Thornton will lie in state at the church from 10am-11am. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, August 10, 2012 from 7
