James Edward VanMeter, Sr.

James Edward VanMeter Sr., age 80, of Dahlonega, GA, died Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. VanMeter was born in Aragon, GA and had lived in Lumpkin County since 1984. He was a former resident of Orlando, Florida. He was retired from the Orange County, Florida Road Department. James was a member of Dahlonega Church of God and served his country as a U.S. Marine during the Korean War. He was also a member of Woodmen of the World.

James was the son of the late Roy Thomas VanMeter and Vivian Alene Childers VanMeter and was also preceded in death by sisters, Shirley Wehunt and Linda Dooley; brothers, Marvin, Archie, and Jerry VanMeter.

He is survived by his wife, Shelby VanMeter, Dahlonega, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Kathy VanMeter, Dahlonega, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Ron Hall, Jasper, GA; daughter-in-law, Joan VanMeter, Dahlonega, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy and Ruby VanMeter, Atlanta, GA, Steve and Wilma VanMeter, Stone Mountain, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Nettie Mae and Sammy Southern, High Springs, FL; grandchildren, Heather Wheeler, Tabitha Cooper, and her husband, Justin, Dustin VanMeter; great-grandchildren, Logan and Nolan Wheeler, Ethan and Nathan Cooper, and Nicki VanMeter. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. VanMeter are scheduled for 2 PM Saturday, September 15, 2012, at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega, GA.

Rev. Larry Henry will officiate.

Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by the Veterans Alliance Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega on Thursday from 6 PM until 8 PM, Friday from 6 PM until 8 PM, and on Saturday from 12 Noon until 2 PM.
