George Clark Elmore

Mr. George Clark Elmore, age 84, of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Services are scheduled for 11:00 am Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel with interment to be held at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Dr. Steve Brown will officiate.

A native of Asheville, NC, he was the son of
the late George Elmore and Frances (Clark) Elmore. He has lived in the Gainesville for the past 20 years. He attended the University of Florida and owned and operated Elcon Foods before retirement. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Most recently he worked at the Chattahoochee Golf Course in Gainesville.

While George had outlived all of his siblings, and most of his family he had a very large extended family. He was a part of a group of men who ate lunch together at the Longstreet Café on a regular basis. There they talked, argued sports, local politics, and solved the world's problems.

George was a huge Florida Gators fan, He was always in a minority living in Bulldog and Yellow Jacket country. He defended his Gators, and gave as good as he got.

Another family was his St. Luke family. He loved this little church and the people in it. They took George in, loved on him, fed him, and made him part of their family.

George's most recent job was at Chattahoochee Golf Course, where he was part of another family. There he renewed old friendships, made new friends, and was a great ambassador to the golf course. It was there he sat on the back deck, smoking a good cigar, and surveying "his" forty acres of heaven.

His last extended family was the Smokey Springs Retirement Community, where he lived his last few years. He once again made new friends and formed a close bond with a number of men and women, whom he shared meals and life with. He loved singing in the choir, taking trips, and playing Bingo. He was proud of being the defending horse shoe champion there.

Though his hair had turned gray and his step was slow, George was young at heart. He always enjoyed a good joke and a good laugh and loved the give and take of being a "Man's man". He was generous and grateful to the ones he loved. George stood on his faith, and his life was his sermon. The Doxology has been sung. The prayers have been prayed. The Benediction pronounced. The message will forever live in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, John Elmore, Harry Elmore, Edward Elmore, Patricia Ledford and Bette Carr.

George is survived by his daughter, Darlene Ragan of Jacksonville, FL; ex-wife, Mary Sue Elmore also of Jacksonville, FL; friend and Caregiver Susan Nickerbocker of Gainesville.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested contributions be made to St. Luke Church 1085 Green Street Circle Gainesville, GA 30501..
