Edmund Park Langley, Jr

Obituary Date: Tuesday, December 4, 2012
Edmund Park Langley, Jr., known as Ed to his family and friends, joined his wife of 47 years, Elaine; parents, Edmund Sr. and Evora; and brother, Wiley in heaven on Tuesday, December 4, 2012.

Funeral Service will be held Saturday December 8, 2012 at 3:00 PM at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel. Rev. Wayne Johnson will officiate. Interment will follow at Hamilton Mill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday, December 8, 2012 from 1-3 PM at the funeral home.

Mr. Langley was born August 21, 1923 in Opelika, Alabama. He married Elaine Smith in Biloxi, Mississippi before he left for the army in WWII. He served in the 57th Fighter Group of the Army Air Corp representing Alabama on the island of Corsica as a bombardier and navigator in B25 planes. After 70 missions, he returned to the states leaving the army receiving the soldiers' medal for saving his flight crew from an unexploded bomb. He retired from civil service at Fort McPherson after 45 years of service in 1987. His only daughter, Martha was born in 1946 in Mobile, Alabama where he and Elaine lived after the war until they moved in 1965 to Forest Park, GA for him to continue working for the government.

After his wife Elaine died in 1991, he learned to ballroom dance, which he continued until age 82. He became the DJ for his Senior Dance group, providing music for the dances on CDs which he created on the computer which he learned to use in his 70s. He loved to travel doing cruises to Alaska, The Caribbean, Panama Cancel and Europe. He traveled across Canada on the train and traveled to many places in the United States crossing the country several times in his lifetime. He attended many 57th Fighter reunions including the trip to Washington, D.C. where he saw the WWII Memorial which he was pleased to get to see. He was a wonderful craftsman, building his own home in 1955 for his family in Mobile. He created many clocks from wood including grandfather and mantel styles for the family and friends. He loved creating many wood items including curio cabinets and built-ins in his home. He accepted Jesus when he returned from the war and taught the youth in church. He was a kind and loving father, husband and grandfather. He took great care of his wife when she was sick for ten years. He would help people including giving them the shirt off his back if they needed it. He always had a joke to tell which made his family and friends delighted.

He is survived by his daughter, Martha Susan Lappington and son-in-law, John, two grandchildren, Dorothy Elaine Lappington Fox and John Lappington III, two great grandchildren, Adam Weldon Fox and Rachael Susan Fox, grandson-in-law, Jay Fox and special family friend, Dorothy Terry. All of his living family resides in Georgia.
