Catherine Jackson Porter

Catherine Jackson Porter, 93, of Demorest, Georgia, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2012.

She was born in Winder, Georgia, December 17, 1919, the daughter the late Ernest Ellsworth Jackson and Sunie Williams Jackson. She was the widow of Royce Leonard Porter, Sr.

After raising her children, Mrs. Porter returned to Piedmont College at the age of 50 to complete her education to become a teacher and librarian and worked at the Demorest Elementary School until her retirement. Catherine was an accomplished weaver, basket maker, seamstress, and cook. She loved to read, enjoying books throughout her life. She also loved gardening, birding, and the pursuit and restoration of antiques. She was a lifelong member of Demorest Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons Royce Leonard (Pete)Porter, Jr. (Elaine) of Oxford, Georgia, Ellsworth Jackson (Jack) Porter (Annette) of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and daughter Sue Porter Cronic (David) ofToccoa, Georgia; grandchildren include TammaraPorter Macaluso (Jim) of Valpariaso, IN, Melissa Porter Brewington (Rick) of Spartanburg, SC, James Jeffrey Porter of Atlanta, GA, Julie Porter Bemiss(Phil) of Atlanta, GA, Anna Catherine Cronic ofToccoa, GA, and David Andrew Cronic of Toccoa, GA. Catherine is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Caitlyn Lane Bemiss and Porter Jane Bemiss as well as two step grandchildren and their spouses, five step great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She loved her family dearly and was loved by them. She was predeceased by hersisters, sisters in law, brothers in law and their spouses making her the last of her generation. She was also preceded in death by her late daughter in law, Brenda Pardue Porter.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all those involved in Mrs. Porter's care especially the staff of The Wilkinson Center, Margaret and Michael O'Brien and staff and Northeast Georgia Hospice.

There will be a memorial service and reception on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 2:00 PM, at Hillside Memorial Chapel located at 5495 Highway 197 South, Clarkesville, Georgia (706-754-6256). Dr. Tom Mewborn will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salvation Army or Northeast Georgia Hospice.
