Colonel Joseph William Hayes, Jr.

Colonel Joseph William Hayes, Jr., retired, 88 of Gainesville died Wednesday January 30, 2013.

Born on Sullivans Island, South Carolina, June 22, 1924, Colonel Hayes was the son of the late Joseph William, Sr., and Lowree McFarland
Hayes. He entered the University of South Carolina School of Mechanical Engineering in June of 1946. On May 29, 1949, he applied for and received a direct commission and call to active duty as a second lieutenant, Corps of Engineers USAR. Subsequently, he successfully
completed a competitive tour and was commissioned as a second lieutenant of Artillery, Regular Army in February 1952. Colonel Hayes served in a number of Commands during his military career and in May of
1977 he was reassigned to Headquarters,FORSCOM in Atlanta, Ga. He retired in 1978.

Colonel Hayes was a member of the Gainesville First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Amy K. Hayes, Gainesville; daughter, Rose Ann Hayes, Copperas Cove, Texas; son and daughter-in-law; Dr. David Keith Hayes and his wife Sandy Whitley, San Antonio, Texas; granddaughter, Kelley Michelle Hayes, Copperas, Texas; sister and brother-in-law; Betty and Richard Cavallini, Pennsylvania; sister, Catherine Faust, Columbia, SC; brother and sister-in-law; Arthur David and Elaine Hayes, Columbia, SC.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday February 4, 2013 at Lanier Village Estates. Rev. Richard Evans and Rev. Kathy Lamon will officiate. Interment will follow on Tuesday February 5, 2013 at the Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, South Carolina with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Samaritan Fund at Lanier Village Estates or the Gainesville First United Methodist in memory of Colonel Hayes.
