Rev. Grady L. Carpenter, 91, of Gainesville, GA passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2013 following a period of declining health.
Born in Habersham County, GA. on November 29, 1921, he was the son of the late John and Elsie Flanagan Carpenter. Rev. Carpenter was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army and participating in D-Day plus two. He was a retired Baptist Minister having served at a number of churches in Northeast Georgia including Rehoboth Baptist Church in Bowman, GA; Southside Baptist Church in Salisbury, N.C.; Rowan Mills Baptist Church in Salisbury, N.C.; Montgomery Memorial Baptist Church in Gainesville, GA; Enon Baptist Church in Lula, GA; Wolf Creek Baptist Church in Lakemont, GA. In addition to being a member of Montgomery Memorial Baptist Church, Rev. Carpenter served for 26 years at Montgomery Memorial Baptist Church. He was Pastor Emeritus at Montgomery Memorial Baptist Church. Rev. Carpenter served at both Enon and Wolf Creek Baptist Churches after retiring.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Bert Carpenter, son, Walter Carpenter and grandson, David Pethel; Brothers, Richard Carpenter and George Carpenter.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Lisa Carpenter of Gainesville; daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Ken White of Oakwood, Jean and Ben Pethel of Gainesville; grandchildren, Tara and Cary Lawler, Haley and Bryan Cagle, Jonathan and Keri Carpenter, Nathan and Kristen White, Allison and Daniel Funk, Ashley and Greg Graham; great grandchildren, Brecken Lawler, Chase Lawler, Audrey Graham, Brody Graham, Addyson Cagle, Cooper Funk, Avery Cagle; mother-in-law, Frances Abercrombie of Suwanee; sisters, Louise Adams of Demorest, Jane Henson of Sugar Hill; brother, Jimmy Carpenter of Clayton; sister-in-law, Elaine Carpenter of Clayton and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Montgomery Memorial Baptist Church. Rev. Robert Kersh, Rev. Mike Taylor and Rev. Darryl Womack will officiate. Interment will be in Alta Vista Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends at the Little & Davenport Funeral Home on Monday, May 20, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
