Ernest Jones Hughie

Ernest Jones Hughie "Ernie" of Cumming, GA passed away on October 8th, 2013 at Embracing Hospice in Cumming.

Ernie graduated from Clarkston High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from North Georgia College, was a Distinguished Military Graduate, member of the Order of Scabbard and Blade, and a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Military Intelligence branch of the Army and served with the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, KY for two years. Ernie married Susan Johns in August of 1975 and gave her 38 years of love and adventure.
Upon leaving active military service, Ernie worked as an investigator for the Fulton County Solicitor General. He and a partner founded the Atlanta-Metro Drug and Vice Squad, a multi-agency task force. During those years he also attended Atlanta Law School, earning a Juris Doctorate in Law.
With an entrepreneurial spirit, he left law enforcement to open a flooring sales and installation business. His business grew and thrived over twenty-five years. His work with builders in new home construction led him to open a construction business also.
His was a life well-lived. Ernie loved cars, motorcycles, boats, water skiing, snow skiing, tennis, scuba diving, and traveling. Between 1998 and 2001, he earned his private pilot's license and instrument rating and enjoyed flying his Cessna 172 to the beach.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Susan, of Cumming, GA; mother, Thelma Hughie Goss, of Jefferson, GA; sisters and brothers-in-law, Angela and Gary Adams of Lawrenceville, GA and Jim and Patti Crawford of Auburn, GA; 7 nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Lieutenant Colonel Ernest Jones Hughie, Sr.

A celebration of his life will be held at Trinity Church, 2685 Steve Tate Road, Marble Hill, GA on Saturday, October 19th at 10:00 a.m. followed by a brunch in the Fellowship Hall.
