Alvin Gibbs

Obituary Date: Monday, November 18, 2013

Alvin Gibbs, age 91 of Gainesville, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2013.


Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. John Samples will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 from 6 - 8 pm at the funeral home.

Mr. Gibbs was born in Gainesville, Georgia to the late Grover Cleveland Gibbs, Sr. and Nancy Anna Edge Gibbs. He lived all his life on "Happy" Oak Street, as he called it, until he married Mary Jo Chambers on Valentine's Day 1953. Alvin was a WW II Veteran, having proudly served in the U.S. Army from August 1940 to October 1945, in the Southwest Pacific from New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He was in the battle of Luzon that liberated the Philippines. Due to his tenure in the military, he was very patriotic. Alvin was retired from Southland Publishing Company with over 34 years of service. He and Mary Jo met at the newspaper in 1951 and worked together until he retired in December of 1984. Alvin was a kind and decent man, with a good sense of humor and loved dearly by many family and friends. In addition to his parents, Alvin was predeceased by his sisters, Lavinia Gibbs Skinner and Mary Gibbs Robertson Cook and brothers, William Edgar Gibbs, Grover Cleveland Gibbs, Jr. and Hubert Gibbs.

Mr. Gibbs is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Mary Jo Chambers Gibbs of Gainesville, sister, Kathryn Gibbs Parker of Gainesville, sisters-in-law, Sallie Gibbs Chapman of Talmo and Beverly Chambers Jarmon of Gainesville, brother-in-law, Jerry Chambers of Norcross, sister-in-law & husband, Rita Chambers Helton & William Helton of Clermont, nephews, David Michael Chambers of Atlanta and Jeffery Thomas Chambers of Bradenton, Florida, special cousins, Ralph & Louise Brechter of Gainesville and many other nieces and nephews.
