Elizabeth Tillson Alexander

Obituary Date: Sunday, December 22, 2013

Elizabeth Tillson Alexander, age 101, of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2013 of natural causes at Dogwood Forest Retirement Community.


Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 1:00 pm in the South Side of Memorial Park Cemetery in Gainesville, Georgia. Reverend Calvin Haney will officiate. The family will receive friends and family on Saturday, December 28, 2013 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Elizabeth was born March 5, 1912 in Arlington, Virginia to the late Ernest Ward Tillson and Janie Olive Vessie Tillson. She had 2 brothers and 4 sisters. Elizabeth attended Washington-Lee High School in Clarendon, Virginia, graduating in 1930. Later that year, she began business school and graduated from Strayer College in 1932. After graduation, she went to work at the Fairfax County Courthouse. She later married the late Gordon Lee Alexander, Sr. and in 1937, the couple moved to Augusta, Georgia to work for the Georgia Railroad. The couple were married for 64 years and were blessed with 4 children; Gordon Lee Alexander, Jr., William Ernest Alexander, Elizabeth Alexander Houska and Raymond Tillson Alexander. Elizabeth was the secretary and treasurer for the Auxiliary of the Georgia Locomotive and Fireman's Association for 20 years. She was also very active in her church and taught second grade Sunday School for 25 years at Trinity-on-the-Hill United Methodist Church in Augusta. She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. Her yard in Augusta was a beautiful display of azaleas and camellias. At a young age, she developed a great love for all sports, especially baseball. She was always a dedicated Braves fan. Elizabeth and Gordon moved to Gainesville in the late 1980's, where they attended St. Paul Methodist Church.

Elizabeth is survived by her sons, Bill and Ray, her daughter, Betty, 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She has lived such a long and prosperous life, touching so many with gifts that we will all cherish.
