Marcia Wellons

Obituary Date: Tuesday, December 9, 2014

Marcia Wellons, 79, of Clarkesville GA passed away on December 9, 2014 at Lanier Village Estates, Gainesville GA. She now joins her twin sister, Kathryn, who passed away in 1940.

Marcia was born on April 28, 1935 to Stanley C. and Kathryn S. Donnelly in Oak Park, IL two hours after her twin. Shortly afterwards the family moved to Naperville, IL where Marcia received her primary education. In 1947 the Donnelly family moved to Durham, NC across the street from her future husband, J.D. After high school Marcia attended St. Joseph College in Hartford CN, receiving a BS degree in Foods and Nutrition. She then went to work as a dietitian for the Duke University Dining Halls where J.D. was a student. On June 3, 1958, she and J.D. were married in Durham, NC. She was awarded her PhT ( putting hubby through school) as well as having four children before J.D. completed his graduate studies. She then retired as a professional dietitian to concentrate on raising her family.

When the family moved to Ames, IA and later to Corvallis, OR, Marcia continued as a full time home maker while pursuing her hobbies of reading, gardening for food and fun, roller and blade skating, sketching and writing. Being a Boy/Girl Scout, soccer, wrestling & band mom plus PTA activities filled out her days. In 1981 the nest emptied with all kids in or ready for college when she and J.D. moved to Conyers, GA. Marcia then became the first female volunteer at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, a Trappist monastery in Conyers, working in the monastery gift store several days a week. She also volunteered at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens as a way to expand her gardening skills. When she and J.D. retired to Clarkesville, GA in 2000, Marcia became an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, assisting with their thrift shop and with Sharing and Caring, a local aid organization for families in need where she served on the Board of Directors. In addition Marcia was very active at St. Mark Catholic Church, participating in many activities as well as serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.

Marcia is survived by her husband of 56 years, J.D. Wellons and her sons Dave (wife Edna), Michael (wife Helen) and Will (wife Nan) and daughter Deborah Pulliam (husband Kyle); thirteen grandchildren Rebecca Fling (husband Kirby), Rachel Cornielson (husband Chris), Sarah Wellons, Megan Wellons, Lauren Wellons, Madelynn Wellons, Steven Pulliam, Kelly Pulliam, Hannah Wellons, Samantha Wellons, Tony Wellons, Beth James and Karen James; and one great grandson, Shane Cornielson.

A memorial Mass will be held at St. Helena Catholic Church on December 20 at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her honor to Habitat for Humanity of Northeast Georgia, P.O. Box 982 , Clarkesville, GA, 30523.
