Shirley Price after an extended illness passed away January 25, 2015, the first of two daughters born to Jake and Louise Tolbert in Jackson County on July 1, 1935.
Her parents, her sister Sue Gilmer and husbands Eddie McGuire and Gene Price preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son Dr. Rad McGuire, daughter in law Jana McGuire, granddaughter Micah McGuire, niece Tanya G. Caldwell, nephews Alan and Jim Gilmer and four great nieces.
Shirley began school in Gainesville and was a graduate of Gainesville High School where she was active in sports and was on the staff of the school yearbook and newspaper.
She attended Mercer University for two years where she was very active in intermural sports and was a cheerleader. She received her BA from Brenau University and her Master's in Education at North Georgia College, after which she began a very rewarding teaching career that spanned twenty-five years.
Mrs. Price is heralded with creating the first physical education program at Candler Elementary in 1976, which today is Myers Elementary.
Shirley was presented the Dawson County Teacher of the Year award in 1989 and named to the Who's Who among American Teachers in 1992 and 1994.
Shirley was an active member of Lakewood Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at Little & Davenport Funeral Home Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 11:00 am. Dr. Tom Smiley, Dr. Jerry Gill and Rev Don Ormsbee will officiate. Interment will be in The Alta Vista Cemetery. The visitation will be held Friday evening from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
