Henry V. Martin Jr.

Obituary Date: Sunday, March 1, 2015
Mr. Henry V. Martin, Jr. , 90, was carried away by angels to meet his Lord and Savior,

whom he had served since he was 12 years old, on Saturday, February 28, 2015.

He was born in Forsyth County and lived there until Lake Lanier was built and took his

family land. He moved to Oakwood where he lived until 1971 and then moved back to

Forsyth County.

He belonged to two churches in his lifetime that he loved dearly--Mayfield Baptist,

where he served as church clerk for 25 years, and Shady Grove Baptist. He served as

a deacon at both churches.

He was a WWII veteran where he served with the 38th infantry, 10th Mountain division

and was stationed in Italy.

He was loved by all and touched many lives. He could build anything, fix anything, do

anything. He was a quiet man but when he talked, it was to your advantage to listen.

H.V. learned to crochet knitted caps while sitting by his wife's side during her illness and

death. He made over 4,000 of which most were given to cancer patients, newborn

infants, and nursing home patients. The rest were given to children, grandchildren,

great-grandchildren, and friends. Anyone who walked into his home most likely walked

out with a cap.

He has a large family who was loved and admired by his example of how a father and

Christian should be.

He loved his four children and their spouses....but he adored his 11 grandchildren and

their spouses, and his 22 great-grandchildren. All, except the youngest, knew what it

was to have their ribs counted and knew how mules eat corn. And they all giggled with

delight.

H.V. Was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Bernice Smith Martin, his parents,

Henry V. and Roxie Martin,Sr., brothers and sisters Lucille Emmett, Bernice Mooney,

Ray Martin, and Clifton Martin.

He is survived by daughters Dean and Mavis Burtz, Iris F. (Buddy) and Hilda Smith,

Marshall and Joyce Millwood, and son, Eston and Levenia Martin; 11 grandchildren

Steve and Allison Burtz, Ken and Cindy Burtz, Patty and Damon Stancil; Matthew and

Stacy Smith, Rebecca and Todd Dale, Rachel and Brian Nix; Michael and Becky

Millwood, Beth and Todd Skinner; Laura Martin, Abbie Martin and Lena and Mark

Bennett. 22 great-grandchildren: Katie Chester and Josh Burtz; Ally and Sara Kathryn

Burtz and Madison Carder; Jack, Roxie and Emmett Stancil; Jandon and Bailey Smith,

Jordan, Taylor, and Dylan Nix; Jathan Dale; Jacob, Katie-Beth and Timmy Millwood;

Savanna and Sierra Skinner; and John-Martin, Reagan, and Benjamin Bennett; sister

and brother-in-law Eula Jean and W.H. Byers; sister-in-law Ila Martin, brother-in-law and

sister-in-law Clyde and Emmalee Smith. Also many nieces and nephews.

We especially thank the staff in the memory care unit of Gracemont Assisted Living,

Hubert Cranford and June Hulsey, North Georgia Hospice, Dr. Taylor Henson and Dawn

Sosebee, P.A.
