Gerry Sommers

Obituary Date: Saturday, May 9, 2015

Gerry Sommers, 70, of Dahlonega, GA passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2015, after a long and courageous battle with a debilitating brain disorder.  By his side were his wife of 48 years, Nancy Sommers, who lovingly cared for her husband throughout his 8-year battle, and his daughter, Nisa Sommers. He took his last breath in peace and love at Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega, GA, where his bravery and the unbreakable bond of love shared by his family, greatly impacted the devoted doctors and nurses.

Gerry was born December 24, 1944, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, to Royal and Phyllis Sommers. On August 14, 1966, he married the love of his life, and wife of 48 years, Nancy Lee Cleal. He is survived by Nancy, his daughter Nisa of Atlanta, Georgia, and his son Marcus of Pullman, Washington. He has one beloved grandchild by his son, Aislin Blue Sommers. Also surviving are his sisters Susan, Joie, Eileen, and brother Robert. He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

He attended public schools in Cedar Rapids, IA; attended Syracuse University in Russian Studies (1965); graduated from American College University as a Chartered Life Underwriter (1979); and served in the Intelligence Service in the Air Force (1965 – 1968). His professional career took him to Pan American Life, Acacia Mutual Life and to the creation of two successful businesses, Sommers, Moreland & Associates (1981) with his partner and friend John Allen Moreland, and SiteRider (2000).

A longtime resident of Georgia, he settled with his family in Marietta, Big Canoe, and Dahlonega.

Deeply compassionate, Gerry graciously and frequently gave to others. He loved to laugh and was known for his crafty wit. Throughout his life, Gerry was fervently passionate about fishing and reading, and displayed tremendous creativity as a photographer and technology advocate.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2015, at 1:00 PM at Dahlonega Baptist Church, 234 Hawkins St., Dahlonega, GA 30533. Pastor William (Bill) Hutchinson will be officiating the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Chestatee Regional Hospital, 27 Mountain Drive, Dahlonega, GA 30533.
