Harry Fannin Wing, born in Jacksonville Florida on July 17, 1934, moved to Gainesville in 1946, passed away on Tuesday morning May 19. He was 80 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ruby and William Thomas Wing, eight brothers and sisters of which he was the youngest, and his beloved wife of 53 years Betty Williams Wing.
Harry was a Graduate of Gainesville High School, where he lettered a Star Athlete in Track and Football all four years. He received a football scholarship to the University of Florida in 1951. After graduating from the University of Florida he attended Columbia Seminary in Decatur Georgia from 1956 to 1958. During this time he taught Sunday school at Brenau University where he met Betty who was a student at the school. They were married in Gastonia North Carolina in July of 1959. Mr. Wing embarked on a life long career as a Licensed Optician in Gainesville serving the eye care needs of Northeast Georgians for almost 55 years.
He and his family were members of The First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville. Harry served in many capacities at his church: he was an Ordained deacon, preached on occasion, sat on various boards and committees in order to help First Presbyterian grow and become the successful agency ministry it is today. Harry was a volunteer coach, along with his best friend Curtis Segars, he coached a number of youth little league teams including boys baseball and football. Harry was an accomplished artist. His sculptures, Raku pottery, stone and wood carvings, handcrafted boats and various mediums of
expression are displayed in art galleries, homes and private collections around the country.
Harry Wing Sr. is survived by two sons and three grandchildren. Harry F. Wing Jr. (Dub) of Gainesville, father of his grandson Harry F. Wing III (Kip) of Colorado and States Wing and his wife Kerensa of Cumming Georgia and their two children Walker and Kyia. He is also survived by his older brother Ferris Wing of Palm Bay Florida. Harry took an active interest in all his grandchildren and their various careers, scholastic and athletic activities. Mr. Wing was especially moved by his Grandson Kip’s 4 month journey to hike the Appalachian Trail. He took great pleasure in watching his grandson Walker play goalie for Lambert High School’s lacrosse team. His most recent passion was standing on the sideline watching his granddaughter become a star soccer player and all around super athlete.
Dr. Roe Callaway will preside over A Celebration of Life: A Witness to the Resurrection service for Mr. Wing at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, 800 Enota Drive, Gainesville Georgia 30501.
