Mark Alan Herndon

On June 5, 2015 Mark Alan Herndon, age 54, of Gainesville joined his loved ones in heaven having passed away peacefully at Northeast Georgia Medical Center from complications from a very rare Primary Peritoneal Epithelial Mesothelioma.

This good and kind man, respected and loved by all, left behind his wife and best friend of 32 years, Kelly King Herndon; treasured children – son, Winston Mason Herndon of Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law, Adam and Melissa Herndon of Braselton, and a much anticipated first grandchild, Ellery Kay Herndon due August 2015; and daughter, Kelly Claire Herndon, and her boyfriend, Jacob Vandervelde of Jackson, MS.  Mark also leaves behind his dear mother and father, Al and Winifred Herndon of Grayson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sherry and Jimmy Patton of Grayson and Lisa and Sam Crowe of Snellville; father-in-law, Albert King of Clermont; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mike and Sheenagh King of Clermont; numerous beloved aunts, uncles and cousins; and nieces and nephews that were like his own children. 

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Winston and Ida Belle Mason of Centerville; paternal grandparents, Archie Dean and Rubye Herndon of Snellville; and mother-in-law, Barbara Temple King of Gainesville.

Mark was a gentle giant and all who knew him remember his patience and respect for others. He was known in the family as the baby whisperer because of his beautiful singing voice and calm nature capable of rocking any baby to sleep.  Mark grew up in Snellville First United Methodist Church and attended and sang in the choir at Gainesville First United Methodist Church.  He was a proud graduate of South Gwinnett High School where he was a standout athlete in basketball and track, an exemplary math student, and selected a Cometa Star by his peers and teachers.  He was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity at the University of Georgia where he earned a degree in management, later becoming an IT systems engineer. Mark made lifelong friends at every stage of life and was known as a dedicated and ever loyal fan of the Georgia Bulldogs.

Visitation will be held at Wages Funeral Home, 3705 Hwy 78, Snellville, GA 30039 on Thursday, June 11 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A viewing before the funeral will be held on Sunday, June 14 from 2-3 PM at Snellville United Methodist Church, with the funeral beginning at 3:00 PM. Mark will be laid to rest immediately following at the Snellville Historic Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Mark Alan Herndon to Gainesville First United Methodist Church 2780 Thompson Bridge Road, Gainesville, GA, 30506 or Snellville United Methodist Church, 2428 Main Street, E, Snellville, GA 30078.
