Leon McCoy Peters

Obituary Date: Thursday, June 18, 2015

Alexander Funeral Home of Cleveland announces the death of Mr. Leon McCoy Peters, 87, of Dahlonega Georgia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 18, 2015 at home surrounded by his family.  Leon was born November 10, 1927, in Columbus, Georgia to John Benjamin Peters and Isabel Abercrombie Peters.  He was a lifelong resident of Dahlonega with the exception of his travels on the Great Lakes where he greeted every stranger and always left a smile on their face.

Leon began working for Bell Air Craft in the early 1940’s. Then later, worked for US Steel and Standard Oil Co. on the Great Lakes.  He returned to Georgia to work for North Georgia College and marry his beloved Lillie Mae. He enjoyed gold prospecting and fishing with his children and grandchildren. He was a father and grandfather before anything else. Over the years he met many wonderful friends that shared funny memories and endless laughs.

Leon is preceded in death by his wife Lillie Mae, siblings Inez Keith, Glen Peters, Clarence Peters and son-in-law Bennett Shelton.   He is survived by daughters (and sons-in-law): Frances Shelton, Brenda Norrell (and Phil Norrell), Kay Peters (and Bert Rushing) and siblings Vernon Peters, Frances Clark, and BR Peters, family friend Elease Burnett, grandchildren (and spouses): David

Kenimer (and Tammy Kenimer), Sandy King (and James King), PJ Norrell and (Nishala Norrell), Bryan Norrell, Ben Rushing, and Jake Rushing. His great-grandchildren are: Dustin (and Amanda) Kenimer, Maggie Kenimer, James King, Kit King, Lillie King, Ezra King, Ella King, Katelyn Norrell, Gracie Norrell, Cole Norrell, Caleb Norrell and great-great grandson Dalton Kenimer.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Dahlonega Funeral home chapel at 3:00 PM with Reverend Lyman Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Dahlonega Funeral Home.
