Thomas Fowler

Obituary Date: Saturday, March 26, 2016

Thomas D. Fowler, Jr., age 75, passed away at his residence on February 14, 2016 following a sudden illness.  He was survived by his beloved wife Mary Ruth Sykes Fowler who later passed away on March 12, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Geraldine Fowler and his sister Mary Ellen Collier.

Tom was a graduate of Miami Senior High School in Miami, Florida.  He attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. and  received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Georgia State College in Atlanta.

He served in the United States Army on the front lines of the DMZ in Korea.  While in Korea he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was later selected to attend Officers Training School at Ft. Benning, Georgia.

He had a love of flying small planes and earned his private pilots license after taking flying lessons in the Atlanta area.  One year his inquisitive nature led him to surprise his family with a Christmas concert following months of secretly taking flute music lessons.  He and his talented wife Mary Ruth shared a devotion for the arts in the form of paintings and sculpture, which was evident throughout their home.

Tom is survived by his sister Carol George of Harrisonville, Mo., brother James Fowler (Sarah) of Sale Creek, Tenn., brother Robert Fowler (Linda) of Gainesville, brother-in-law William Sykes (Nancy) of Gainesville and a number of beloved nieces, nephews great nieces and nephews.

A private joint family graveside service will be held at Alta Vista Cemetery for Tom and Mary Ruth at a later date.
