George J. Frey

Obituary Date: Tuesday, March 8, 2016

Evans Funeral Home announces the death of George J. Frey, 82, of Athens, who passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, Ga. Mr. Frey was born in Trenton, NJ.  He was the son of the late George and Mary Frey. He was a veteran of the United States Army based in Hawaii. He spent many of those years in the service as a photographer and played on the Army basketball team.  Mr. Frey was retired from Cooper Tire Company, previously known as Oliver Rubber Company. During his forty year tenure, Mr. Frey held various positions including: Plant Manager, Assistant Chemist and Health and Safety Inspector. He was a member of the Refuge Worship Center where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent and Church Elder. 

He was an outstanding softball player and played for several different teams in Central Jersey.  His love of basketball followed him from Trenton Catholic High School to his days as a semi-pro basketball star.  His semi-pro years won him MVP awards and respect within the NJ sports community. Photography was also an avid interest of Mr. Frey. He was a truly loving and caring person to family and friends. 

Mr. Frey is survived by his loving wife, Jo Ann Clark Frey, Jefferson; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Roc Walker of Easton, Pennsylvania; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Rosa of Frenchtown, NJ; son, Douglas of Frenchtown, NJ; grandchildren, Ronnie, Jr., Serena, Derek and Michael Jr., Other survivors include step-daughter, Regina Karow of Alpharetta; step-son, Jonathan Skelton of Buford and step-granddaughter and step -grandson-in-law, Breanne and Corey Villas of Charlotte, NC.                                

Visitation will be held at Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, on Friday, March 11 from 6-8 pm. Mr. Frey’s funeral service will be held in the Evans Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, March 12 at 1:30 pm. The burial will follow in the Evans Memory Gardens.

Contributions can be made to St. Mary's Hospital Neurological Department, for their compassionate care during Mr. Frey's brief stay.
