Zora Lucille Hackney

Obituary Date: Tuesday, April 5, 2016

Zora Lucille Hackney age 78 of Dahlonega, Georgia formerly from Stockbridge, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.  Lucille bravely battled a diagnosis of a highly aggressive lung cancer complicated with pneumonia. 

Lucille was born on February 17, 1938 in Dahlonega, Georgia.  The daughter and one of nine siblings of the late Dave and Clara Dowdy of Dahlonega, Georgia. Lucille was preceded in death by her brothers: Leon, David, Sonny, and Grady Dowdy. Lucille was preceded in death by her three husbands: Howard Vernon Stephens, father of Charles, Susie, Donald, Linda, and David; Demosthenis Paziouros, father of George; and Bobby Joe Hackney. 

Ms. Hackney had recently retired after serving as a bus driver for the Henry County School district for 27 years.  Lucille concluded her career serving the special needs children of her district.  She spent her weekends working for Golden Corral in Stockbridge, Georgia recently ending 20 plus years while cultivating many friendships and meaningful relationships.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: Charles and Dianne Stephens of Dahlonega, Georgia; Donald and Barbara Stephens of Chicago, Illinois; David Stephens of Stockbridge, Georgia; George and Bethany Paziouros of Stockbridge, Georgia; her daughters: Susie Benefield of Gainesville, Georgia, and Linda Moebius of Stockbridge, Georgia;  sisters: Dovie Mae Avans of Dahlonega, Georgia, and Elizabeth Dees of Barnesville, Georgia; and brothers: Jewell Dowdy of Dahlonega, Georgia, and Ronnie Dowdy of Cleveland, Georgia.

“Mama Lucy” is survived by her grandchildren: David and Shannon Benefield of Cumming, Georgia; Sarah and Tim Herrin of Dahlonega, Georgia; William Stephens of Dahlonega, Georgia; Kristin Stephens of Chicago, Illinois; Shane Moebius of Stockbridge, Georgia; Daniel Stephens of Dahlonega, Georgia; David and Amber Stephens of Atlanta, Georgia; Katelyn and Adam Bahr of Chicago, Illinois; Lisa and Ivan Cedeño of Locust Grove, Georgia; Kimberly Stephens of Chicago, Illinois; Tiffany Tice of Stockbridge, Georgia; and Rachel Stephens of Dahlonega, Georgia.

Ms. Hackney is survived by six great-grandchildren; Alexandra Benefield, Carter and Cash Stephens, Oliver Herrin, Joshua Stephens, Austin Johnson, and Leo Bahr.

Lucille is also survived by her loving, faithful, canine companion, Jake.

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 3:30 PM at Dahlonega Funeral Home Chapel, 20 Gibson Road, Dahlonega, Georgia, officiated by her grandson, David R. Stephens, Associate Pastor, Victory Church, Norcross, Georgia.  Family will receive friends from 11AM until service time and immediately following service. 

Memorial contributions will be accepted in the form of live plants.
