Gene Charles Calderwood

Gene Charles Calderwood, age 87, a longtime resident of Clermont, GA & more recently Gainesville, passed away peacefully under hospice care on April 11.

He was born September 13, 1928, to Charles V.  & Cora S. Calderwood, all natives of Tyrone, PA.  He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gainesville and a devoted Sunday School participant.

He joins in Heaven his beloved wife of 56 years, JoAnn Barksdale Calderwood.

He is survived by his adored & loved wife of six years, Jean Bailey Calderwood. Also surviving are his four children, Charles Calderwood and spouse Sandy, Susan Bolton and spouse John, Catherine Griffin and spouse Jay, and Jennifer Powell, as well as twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was a graduate of Juanita College and received a PhD of Chemistry from Rutgers University.  While he was an accomplished research chemist most of his career, he started and ended his career teaching Chemistry at both Rutgers and Truett-McConnell College.  Along the way, he was valedictorian of his high school, a professional trumpeter in a dance band with numerous album recordings, an accomplished tenor vocalist, a prolific vegetable gardener, and a dedicated church choir member.

Reading the Bible early each morning, while drinking coffee watching the sun rise was a pleasure of long standing. 

His loving Family is left to mourn his passing, but rejoice in the knowledge he is in heaven reunited with JoAnn.

A reception with the Family will be held at First Baptist Church of Gainesville, in the parlor, Thursday, April 14th, 10 am to noon.   A private Family Service will be held at a later time.
