Ronnie Eugene Gilmer

Obituary Date: Saturday, May 7, 2016

Ronnie Eugene Gilmer 80, of Cumming, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2016.  He was born on October 6, 1935 in Moreland, Kentucky to William Henry and Dortha Jane (Myers) Gilmer.  On April 7, 1956, Ronnie married Nancy Ann Montgomery, whom he met while attending college at Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky.

After graduating from Morehead State University, he began his teaching career in Kentucky as the Assistant Band Director in LaRue County; later moving to Stanford.  He eventually moved his family to southern Indiana to become the band director at West Washington Junior/Senior High School in Campbellsburg, Indiana.  Mr. Gilmer, as he was known to his students, had a significant impact on all of his students – many of whom consider him their “favorite” teacher.  He retired from teaching in 1988 and moved to Georgia.  To keep busy, he then worked at The Home Depot for another ten years.

He was an avid golfer, fisherman and Ham Radio Operator and in later years enjoyed driving his little red Miata with other members of the Peachtree Miata Club.

Ronnie was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy on December 2, 2001; his son, Gregory Dineene on November 15, 1998; his brother, Scott Bertram Gilmer; and his parents.

He is survived by his two sons and their families: Eric Gilmer and his wife, Jill, and their two daughters, Corinne and Erin, of Cumming, Georgia; Joel Gilmer and his wife, Linda, and their daughter, Ashley, of Indianapolis, Indiana.  He is also survived by his uncle, William (Bill) Myers of Danville, Kentucky.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 12 at 1pm at McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia. Visitation will be Wednesday May 11, from 5-8pm at the funeral home.

Another service will be held in Moreland Kentucky at W.C Pruitt Funeral Home with burial following in the Hustonville Cemetery on Saturday, May 14.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the American Heart Association, Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky, or the charity of your choice in Mr. Ronnie Gilmer’s name.
