Joseph Brown “J.B.” Johnston, Jr

Joseph Brown “J.B.” Johnston, Jr., age 82, of Flowery Branch passed away Thursday, October 20, 2016.

Mr. Johnston was born on November 3, 1933 in Fort Myers, FL to the late Joseph Brown Johnston, Sr. and Lela Summerlin Johnston. He played football at the University of Miami under Coach Andy Gustafson and was an All-Time Letterwinner in 1953 as the Hurricanes’ quarterback. While at Miami, he was a member of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Following his college football career, Mr. Johnston continued his love of the sport by coaching for Hall County Parks and Recreation for more than 25 years. An Army veteran, he made a career in insurance first working for Aetna and then The Norton Agency. Mr. Johnston was a member of Blackshear Place Baptist Church.

Preceeded in death by his parents and sister Corinne Johnston Camp, Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife, Brenda McGregor Johnston; his sons and daughters-in law, Donald Eugene and Jennifer Johnston of Hoschton; Joseph Brown (III) and Wei Johnston of Birmingham, AL; Mark Edward Johnston of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; daughter and son-in law, Elizabeth and Phil Vander Kamp of Birmingham, AL; six grandchildren, Jake Johnston, Annie Johnston, Ann Mei Johnston, Chipper Johnston, Tressa Vander Kamp, Mary Summerlin Vander Kamp; nieces and extended family.

In celebration of Mr. Johnston’s life, the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at Luna’s Restaurant (200 Main Street, SW) in Gainesville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Eagle Ranch, P.O. Box 7200, Chestnut Mountain, GA 30502.
